You Should Know Promoting Diabetes Awareness through Soul & Hip Hop Music

You Should Know is a love story about a young man, who just discovered that he has diabetes and his relationship with his fiancé.  In the song, he tells her about his fate.  The specific situation represented in the song is a dramatic and realistic expression of love.  More importantly, it provides a credential to talk about diabetes.

Verse 1 There's something I need to say.  Something's heavy on my mind.

A disease has come my way.  One that threatens to take my life.

Chemically I'm not the same, and even though I'm not in pain

I've got major challenges ahead.  So, before we wed I think that

Chorus 1 You should know - Darling, because I love you so, Oh Baby

You need to take some time - before you decide - to be with me for life  (Whisper) – I've got diabetes

Verse 2 It could be the foods that I ate, complicated by my over weight

Maybe it was passed to me through my genes, induced by the stress that's in me

No matter the how or why, I could lose a limb, I could go blind

I'm more likely to have a stroke or heart attack and die

That's why baby I want

Chorus 2 You to know –before we go, down that matrimony road

Before we share a house - Before you say I do, before I'm your spouse

Take some time, baby Take Your Time

Turn - Bridge If I could tell my friends, if I could I could do my life again

My diet would definitely change, and I'd try to control my weight

I'd do more exercise.  Vegetables and fruit I would try

My advise is for you is to try prevention

(Whisper) – Prevent diabetes before it starts - Eat right, exercise, get tested

Breakdown

21 million people in the United States have diabetes, that's about 7% of our country's population
Over 6 million of them don't even know they have it

And, while it can't be cured, diabetes, especially Type 2 diabetes can be prevented

41 million Americans have Pre-diabetes and that will turn into Type 2 diabetes,
if they don't change their ways

You need to know your risk factors, watch your diet, exercise

And get tested.  Especially, if your African American, Latino, or Asian
because you're more likely to get diabetes, and you should know, to be continued
